The 12th International Conference on Intercultural Communication
(ICIC 2023)
Call for Papers
On behalf of the Center for Studies of Media Development (CSMD), we invite you to attend the 12th International Conference on Intercultural Communication (ICIC 2023).
The theme for this year is :
Emotional Communities in Intercultural Communication in the Age of Digital Communication.
The conference will be held over two days, from December 8th to December 11th.
Emotions and affects are complex experiences shared by people. The question of what these experiences are is forever intertwined with human civilization and its development. Since the 20th century, an “affective turn” has taken place in fields such as cognitive psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary anthropology, and other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. In the age of digital communication, "emotional flow" is accelerating too.
In the field of intercultural communication, emotions and affects also play an essential role. When the local audiences seek to understand “others”, they will often take a "cognitive shortcut" via an "emotion first" heuristic. When people engage with digital media, they are more willing to trust information and opinion that is consistent with their affective cognition. When judging what is true and what is false, their deliberations are informed by emotional affect. Indeed, human emotions profoundly affect people's selective contact, understanding, and collective memory in the process of intercultural communication.
During the 12th International Conference on Intercultural Communication, we will explore the theoretical and practical research on emotions and affects in the field of intercultural communication. In doing so, we hope to go beyond previous attempts to ontologically determine emotion and affect. Instead, we aim to prioritize their complex social mechanisms in intercultural contexts. We do this with a view to better understand the role that emotion and affect research can play in developing theories of intercultural communication in the digital communications age.
